Kings XI Punjab Team 2019 Players List, Stats, Matches

Kings XI Punjab KXIP team is one of the original eight teams of Indian Premier League and has been part of the tournament in all eleven seasons until now. Established in 2008 and owned by Wadia group heir Ness Wadia, Dabur’s Mohit Burman and Karan Paul and Bollywood actor Preity Zinta, the team plays its home matches in Mohali, Dharamshala and Indore. The team has qualified from the group stages twice in the 11 editions it has played but has never gone on to win the title.

After the last year’s splurge in the auction, the management was equally active in the auction for this edition as they released most of their players before the auction. Some of the retained players were Ravichandran Ashwin, Andrew Tye, Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Karun Nair and David Miller, keeping most of team’s core intact.

Mike Hesson, one of the most successful coaches of the New Zealand cricket team, has been appointed as the head coach of the Kings XI team led by R. Ashwin, for the 2019 season. Since the team will be playing on multiple grounds, the management has tried to pick a squad that is suitable for all conditions. The new look Punjab team will be looking for some consistent performances throughout the tournament this time and qualify for the playoffs this time around after the disappointment from the last season.

The Kings have had some great players like Yuvraj Singh, Adam Gilchrist, S. Sreesanth, Kumar Sangakkara, Shaun Marsh, Brett Lee and others, in the initial years. David Miller, Glenn Maxwell, Virender Sehwag, Piyush Chawla and Thisara Perera are some of the other players who contributed over the years. This new look Kings XI Punjab kxip team will be looking to have a great season with players that provide an overall balance to the team. Karun Nair, KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, David Miller, Mayank Aggarwal and Mandeep Singh together make it one of the best batting lineups of the tournament. The bowling looks slightly weak in the pace department with only Andre Tye and Mohammad Shami providing true quality. With Ravichandran Ashwin, Varun Chakravarthy, Murugan Ashwin and Mujeeb Ur Rahman managing the spin department, and recent acquisition Sam Curran adding all-round balance to the team, this Mohali based franchise looks good on most fronts.

Adam Gilchrist, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Brett Lee, Thisara Perera, Piyush Chawla, David Miller have been some of the top buys of all time for this franchise. This year, Kings XI Punjab kxip team were the biggest spenders of the auction and rightly so, as they had the biggest purse. They bought 13 players, taking the total squad strength to 23. The in-form England all-rounder Sam Curran got the highest price for an overseas player at this year’s auction with Rs. 7.4 cr. The team bought the in-form Indian uncapped player Varun Chakravarthy for a whopping 8.4 cr, making him one of the costliest uncapped players in the IPL history. Some of the other top picks by the team in the recently concluded auction included players like Moises Henriques, Nicholas Pooran, Sarfaraz Khan, Mohammad Shami and Prabhsimran Singh to name a few.

Breakdown of performances for every season

Season 1

The Kings XI Punjab KXIP team had a slow start to the tournament with two losses but got back in the groove from the third match onwards. Backed by the incredible performances of Shaun Marsh with bat and S Sreesanth with the ball, the team won 9 out of 10 matches and reached the semi-finals. However, they lost to CSK and ended up third in the tournament.

Season 2

After a great outing in the opening season, the team was optimistic this season to do even better. Their hopes got dented, as most of the Australian players were busy on national duty and the new signing Jerome Taylor pulled out at the last minute due to injury. They finished the fifth with an equal number of wins and losses.

Season 3

The team had a very bad third season, with just 4 wins out of 14 leaving them behind every team in the table. They finished eighth in the table with the performances of Mahela Jayawardene and Irfan Pathan being the only positives from the tournament.

Season 4

In the fourth season, with the new signings, coach and captain, the team had a fresh look to it. Adam Gilchrist took over the role of captaincy while Michael Bevan was appointed as the coach. The team did well but missed out on qualification for playoffs by just 2 points. The Australian duo of Shaun Marsh and Ryan Harris were the top performers with bat and ball respectively.

Season 5

The team performed decently with 8 wins and 8 losses. The two biggest positives were the emergence of Indian uncapped players like Mandeep Singh and Parvinder Awana, as they were the highest run scorer and wicket taker, respectively. For a team that relied heavily on foreign players, these two were the finds of the tournament.

Season 6

The team again had inconsistent performances in the tournament leaving them 6th out of 10 positions in the table. David Miller played one of the best IPL innings of all time when he smashed 101* from 38 deliveries and took the team to victory while chasing 190 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Azhar Mahmood played a crucial role with the ball and chipped in with few useful contributions with the bat as well.

Season 7

The Kings XI Punjab KXIP team had a small revamp this year and looked good on paper. They delivered the goods this time as they finished second in the table, their best finish in the IPL history. George Bailey led the side brilliantly and the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Sandeep Sharma, Mitchell Johnson and Virender Sehwag gave solid performances throughout. The team lost a closely contested final to Kolkata Knight Riders and went trophyless in this season too.

Season 8

After the highs of the previous season, the team had a torrid run this time as they won just three matches out of the 14, making it their worst season. This inconsistency is what has cost the team the most over the years. David Miller was the top scorer and Indian uncapped player Anureet Singh the highest wicket-taker for the team.

Season 9

Murali Vijay and David Miller captained the team this season but Kings XI again had a poor season with just 4 wins. Murali Vijay did perform with the bat and amassed 453 runs in the process while Sandeep Sharma was the highest wicket-taker with 15 scalps.

Season 10

Virender Sehwag took over the job of the coach and appointed the aggressive Glenn Maxwell as captain. The team had the likes of Eoin Morgan, Hashim Amla and Darren Sammy supporting him ably. The team performed far better than the last two season and finished fifth in the table with 7 wins.

Season 11

The Kings XI Punjab kxip team had a completely new look as they bought almost a full squad in the mega-auction. The management brought in the likes of R. Ashwin, KL Rahul, Andrew Tye, Chris Gayle, Yuvraj Singh and many players to put together a strong team. They performed really well at the start of the tournament giving hopes to everyone that this could be their season. However, every fans’ dreams were shattered as they continuously performed badly at the back end of the tournament and finished 7th in one of the most closely contested editions of the IPL.

Home Ground

The PCA Stadium in Mohali, Punjab is the major home ground of the team. In order to expand their reach, the franchise has also established the stadiums at Dharamshala and Indore as secondary home grounds over the years.

Team name, motto and logo design

The team of the name is Kings XI Punjab, meaning the 11 players representing the team will play with king-like attitude. The motto is same as Punjabis are meant to be high-flying and to roar with confidence. Hence, the logo of the team has graphics of two roaring lions. The team also has the initials of K J H P H on the top, which represents the states of Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.

Jersey Colours

Red is the most prominent colour in the jersey with silver grey stripes on the sides.

Theme Song

“Dhoom Punjabi” has been the theme song of the team for the last few years, which you can often hear at the home grounds of the KXIP team.
