ICC World Cup 2019 – Team India, Injury Update – Shikhar Dhawan out for 3 Weeks

Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the ICC World Cup 2019 for approximately 3 weeks with a fractured thumb. He had been hit on his left thumb while batting during India’s win over Australia at the Oval in London on 9th June 2019.

Shikhar got hit by a steep one from Pat Cummins during his match-winning knock of 117 against Australia. He carried on batting after being treated by team India physio Patrick Farhart.

Dhawan who was on 24 off 26 balls when he got hit, carried on playing as if nothing happened and scored a brilliant 117 of 109 balls to help India post a total of 352. After a poor game against South Africa, the left-hander showed his class and India sealed a 36-run win over the Aussies.

Post match medical analysis on Dhawan revealed a fractured thumb which will take a minimum of 21 days to heal. The south-paw will not play in India’s matches against New Zealand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, West Indies and England, which are all scheduled to be played in June.

KL Rahul will be the likely opening partner for Rohit Sharma in the absence of Dhawan. This injury will come as a setback for India as Shikhar Dhawan is considered a big-game player and has an impeccable record in the ICC tournaments.
